Brighton has changed enormous over the years, and perhaps nothing demonstrates this as well as the difference today between the two piers. The Palace Pier, still operating, maintains something of the original seaside feeling to the city, the West Pier now ironically a beauty spot with it’s bird life, reminds us of Brighton’s past life.
I like the composition of this illustration. It’s almost as if the West Pier seems to be a distant memory of days gone by as it recedes into the horizon. The present pier, gently decaying, seems to follow the West Pier’s fate as time passes and the city moves into the future.
